  Windows XP Service Pack 2 Reconfigure


TO TURN OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES
1. Start — Settings — Control Panel
2. Double-click on Automatic Updates to see the window
3. Left-click on Turn off Automatic Updates to place the black dot (radio button).
4. Left-click on the Apply button to apply the setting.
If a balloon appears in the System Tray saying "Your computer might be at risk" simply click on the X to close it.
5. Close the Automatic Updates window using the OK button.

TO CONFIGURE THE SECURITY CENTER
To Disable the Alerts
1. Start — Settings — Control Panel
2. Double-click on Security Center to see the window
3. Under the “Resources” section on the left side, left-click on “Change the way Security Center alerts me” to see the Alerts
Settings window.
4. Remove the check marks for “Firewall”, “Automatic Updates”, and “Virus Protection”.
5. Left-click on the OK button to accept the settings.

To Disable the Windows Firewall
This sections assumes you are at the Security Center window. (If not perform this, Start — Settings — Control Panel — Double-click
on Security Center to see the window).
1. Under the “Manage security settings for:” near the button, left-click on Windows Firewall.
2. Left-click on the Advanced tab to see the options.
3. Under the "Network Connection Settings" section remove the check box for the network types shown.
(For example, 1394 Connection, Local Area Connection, or any connection type you may have renamed in the Network Connections
window).
4. Left-click on the OK button to accept the settings.
5. Close the Security Center window using the X button.

TO TURN OFF THE SECURITY CENTER SERVICE
This section assumes you are in Control Panel. (If not perform this, Start — Settings — Control Panel).
1. Double-left click on the Administrative Tools icon to see the options.
2. Double-left click on the Services icon to see the window.
3. Locate the Security Center service in the list and highlight it.
4. Double-click on "Security Center" to see the options.
5. Set the "Startup type" drop-down list to Disabled.
6. Left-click on the Stop button to stop the service. (This may take a few seconds to complete).
7. Left-click on the OK button to accept the settings.

TO TURN OFF THE WINDOWS FIREWALL/INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING (ICS) SERVICE
This section assumes you are in Services. (If not perform this, Start — Settings — Control Panel — Administrative Tools —
Services).
1. Locate the "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" service to highlight it.
2. Double-left click on "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" to see the options.
3. Set the "Startup type" drop-down list to Disabled.
4. Left-click on the Stop button to stop the service. (This may take a few seconds to complete).
5. Left-click on the OK button to accept the settings.

TO TURN OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES SERVICE
This section assumes you are in Services. (If not perform this, Start — Settings — Control Panel — Administrative Tools —
Services).
1. Locate the "Automatic Updates" service to highlight it.
2. Double-left click on "Automatic Updates" to see the options.
3. Set the "Startup type" drop-down list to Disabled.
4. Left-click on the Stop button to stop the service. (This may take a few seconds to complete).
5. Left-click on the OK button to accept the settings.
6. Close the Services window using the X button.
7. Restart the computer.

INTERNET EXPLORER SETTINGS
There are settings for Internet Explorer that you may want to set depending on your requirements.
TO TURN OFF AUTOMATIC
This section assumes you are in Control Panel. (If not perform this, Start — Settings — Control Panel).
1. Double-click on the Internet Options icon to see the options.
2. Left-click on the Advanced tab to see the options.
OPTIONAL: You may want to use the Restore Defaults if you think these settings have already been modified.
3. Under the Browsing section, remove the check mark for “Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates”.
4. Under the Security section place a check mark for “Allow active content to run in files on My Computer”.
(This allows, for example, links from HTML pages on your HDD to .PDF files on your HDD to open.)
5. Left-click on the Apply button to accept the changes.

TO SET SECURITY TO THE DEFAULT SETTINGS
This section assumes you are in the Internet Properties window. (If not perform this, Start — Settings — Control Panel — Internet
Options).
1. Left-click on the Security tab to see the options.
2. Left-click on the “Internet” icon to highlight it.
3. Left-click on the “Default Level” button.
4. Left-click on the “Custom Level” button to see the options.
5. Scroll down to the Downloads section.
6. Enable Automatic prompting for file downloads.
7. Left-click on the “Apply” button, then on the “OK” button.
8. Left-click on the “Local intranet” icon to highlight it.
9. Left-click on the “Default Level” button.
10. Left-click on the “Trusted sites” icon to highlight it.
11. Left-click on the “Default Level” button.
12. Left-click on the “Restricted sites” icon to highlight it.
13. Left-click on the “Default Level” button.
14. Left-click on the Apply button to accept the changes.
15. Left-click on the OK button to close the Internet Properties window.

Outlook Express Settings

1. With Outlook Express open, left-click on the Tools menu to see the list.
2. Move to Options… to highlight it, and left click.
3. Left-click on the Security tab to see the options.
4. Under the “Download Images” section, remove the check mark to allow images to appear for your incoming e-mail messages.

POP-UP BLOCKER NOTE:
The pop-up blocker is turned on by default. If you want to turn it off perform the following:
Start — Settings — Internet Options — Security tab — Internet zone — Custom Level… — Miscellaneous — Use Pop-up Blocker — Disable
You can allow a pop-up without changing the above if you hold down the Control (Ctrl) button as you click on a link.

Incoming mail (POP3): pop.elseroad.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.comcast.net
Account name: tom%elseroad.com
Check "My server requires authentication
• Settings - Log on using
• Account name: tomelseroad@comcast.net
• Password: for the Comcast account
 

On the Advanced tab
Outgoing mail (SMTP): 465 - Check "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
Incoming mail (POP3): 110 - Unchecked Check "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
